Dame Edith Okowa, Heroine Of Global Fight For The Elimination Of Sickle Cell Anaemia

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Delta State on Health Monitoring, Dr. Michael Nwoko, have described Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa, wife of the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, as the heroine of the global fight for the elimination of Sickle Cell Anaemia.
Dr. Nwoko, made the commendation while addressing newsmen at the end of 'Match For Sickle Cell Anaemia' road walk held in Asaba, the Delta State Capital on Friday 20th of September, 2019.

The road rally was organized by 05 Initiative Foundation of the first Lady of Delta State.

In commending Her Excellency for her concern for the plights of Sickle Cell patients, the SSA, referred to the first lady's popular quote, 'I am not expecting you to change the world; all I ask is that you change the world of one person; do that and you would have accomplished a world of good' and stated that such a statement can only come from a woman with the heart of gold.

Dr. Nwoko went ahead to enumerate the giant strides of Her Excellency in the fight to eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia in Delta State vis-a-vis globally.
His words, 'Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa, the wife of the Governor  Delta State, Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, is the heroine of the global fight for the elimination of Sickle Cell Anaemia. Her world view as reflected in her popular quote, 'I am not expecting you to change the world; all I ask is that you change the world of one person; do that and you would have accomplished a world of good, showed that she is a women with a heart of gold. Deltans are lucky to have such perfect couple in charge of their affairs', Dr Nwoko maintained.

Continuing, the SSA added, Her Excellency, through her 05 Initiative Foundation, has embarked on so many far reaching projects aimed at managing, curing and complete elimination of Sickle Cell Anaemia in Delta State and by extension globally. Some of these projects are benefiting so many Deltans as we speak.

Dr. Nwoko went ahead to enumerate some of the laudable Sickle Cell Anaemia projects being executed by Her Excellency. 'Her Excellency, on June 1st this year, through her 05 Initiative Foundation, handed over a Sickle Cell Referral Centre to the Specialist Hospital Asaba, built by the Foundation. The World class facility, brings the number of such facilities the Foundation has built to 13 across the State. We have similar facilities at Orerokpe Ughelli, Otu Jeremi, Oleh, Kwale, Pstani, Sapele, Eku, Koko, Agbor, Umunede and Issele-Uku.'

'In addition to the provision of these facilities, the 05 Initiative is a leading advocator for more comprehensive research on ways to  permanently eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia globally.' The SSA emphasised.

The SSA concluded thus, 'public awareness has been adjudged to be the best way of tackling endemic problems like the Sickle Cell Anaemia, and Her Excellency's 05 Initiative Foundation, has been in the forefront in educating and sensitising Deltans on ways to prevent, manage, cure and completely eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia.
As you can see, we have just completed one of such sensitisation road walk.'

Those who participated in the road walk includes ; Her Excellency, Dame Edith Okowa, Wife of the Governor, The Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye, The SSA to the Governor on Health Monitoring, Dr. Michael Nwoko, Director, Medical Services and training of the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Charles Ofili, Director Planning Research and Statistics of the Ministry, Dr. Ejiro Ogheneaga, The Facility Manager of the Asaba Specialist Hospital, Mrs. Ade Laura and a host of other Staff of the Ministry and the Asaba Specialist Hospital.
