The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Health Monitoring, Dr. Michael Nwoko has expressed optimism that Delta State will sooner than later, reverse the ugly trend of medical tourism in Nigeria.

Dr. Nwoko expressed this views at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, on Friday 15th November 2019, during a joint press briefing with his colleague, Dr. Patrick Onwuachi and the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Onome Ogueh as well as top management staff of the Hospital shortly after touring the various departments, units and wards of the health facility.

His words, 'what I have seen here is one of the best health facilities in this part of the country in terms of physical infrastructure and state-of-the-art medical equipment. It is obvious that the facility is up and running and of course this is necessary in order for it to live up to its strategic and important status as the only State owned tertiary health facility. This makes it the flagship of the State government healthcare delivery service. This equally underscores the special premium the State Government under the command of our amiable Governor Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa places on the facility, in terms of enhancing it's capacity to deliver quality, affordable and accessible healthcare to the people of Delta State.' He stated.

Further Dr. Nwoko said, 'you will agree with me that the reconstruction work being carried out in the main administrative building and other parts of the hospital is very massive. I want to state without fear of contradiction that, when this project is completed, this facility is going to be the best health facility in this part of the Country. I am aware that there are referrals from neighboring States to this facility. The whole idea is that His Excellency wants to make this health facility a centre of excellence and I am highly optimistic that  Delta State is on the verge of reversing the trend of medical tourism in Nigeria. Medical tourism will be reversed by Delta State sooner than later and this health facility will be a pride of the State as encapsulated in the stronger Delta agenda of His Excellency, Sen Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of Delta State. I want to thank the management team of the Hospital led by the Chief Medical Director for their efforts and I also sieze this opportunity to encourage them to do more to ensure that the facility remains the pride of our dear State. ' Dr. Nwoko emphasised.

The SSA added, the Governor places high premium on the health sector.  That is why he is doing his best to fund the sector by providing equipment, infrastructure and personnel because he  is fully aware that it is only when there is physical infrastructure, state- of-the-art Medical equipment, personnel in terms of manpower and conducive working environment as evident in this facility that you can guarantee Universal Health Coverage. Dr Nwoko concluded'.

Also addressing the Press, Dr. Patrick Onwuachi commended His Excellency for keeping faith with his campaign promises.
His words, 'I want to begin by commending His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of Delta State for keeping faith with his campaign promises, as you can see, this health facility is a construction site, the transformation being initiated and executed by the Governor is unprecedented and it is something every Deltan should be proud of and key into.
The contractors handling the reconstruction work have assured us that it will be delivered by December and I have no doubt that the centre will provide the best healthcare service when fully reconstructed.
I want to commend the Chief Medical Director and his management team, you are doing a good job, thank you, Dr. Onwuachi concluded'.

Earlier the Chief Medical Director of the hospital Dr. Onome Ogueh, commended His Excellency for creating a Health Monitoring team led by Dr. Michael Nwoko to monitor health facilities in the State. He thanked the team for their proactiveness and strategy of visiting and assessing the health facilities without notice and added that the initiative clearly demonstrates the Governor's keen interest in the health sector.
The CMD further stated that the Government had responded to his appeal for a holistic renovation of the Hospital and that by the time all the reconstruction work is completed, it will have a total of 300 bed space from the initial 200 bed space, and it will have one of the best orthopaedic and dialysis Centres in the Country. All these, His Excellency, the Governor is doing to make this place a centre of excellence.

In conclusion, the CMD informed that given the enormous space and infrastructure in the facilitiy, it is open to Puplic, Private Partnership(PPP) to further develop it to a World class standard and that the hospital will continue to contribute its quota by way of rendering excellent service in order to achieve the Universal Health Coverage Policy of the State Government.'
