NGOs should Emulate Rotary Club's Community Service Initiatives - Dr. Michael Nwoko
The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Delta State on Health Monitoring, Dr. Michael Nwoko, has urged Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the State and Country at large to emulate the community development and health service intervention programs of Rotary International Club.
The SSA made the call on Thursday 24th 2019, while addressing the Press at Cable Point Primary Health Care Centre, Asaba, after participating in the NGO's polio immunisation and eradication sensitisation rally which took place in major streets and health facilities within the State capital.
Speaking after administering polio vaccine to some babies at Cable Point Primary Healthcare Centre, Asaba, Dr. Nwoko commended Rotary International for its humanitarian gestures, describing the Club as a pillar in global fight to eliminate the scourge of the deadly poliomyelitis.
His words, 'I want to commend Rotary International, especially the Asaba district for its humanitarian activities. The Club has over the years, proven to be a pillar in global fight to wipe out poliomyelitis from the surface of the earth.
Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause temporary or permanent paralysis. It was reported to have been eliminated in Nigeria some years back, but resurged again, hence the need for combined efforts of everyone to finally wipe it out from existence.' He emphasised.
Further, the SSA added, 'Rotary has been outstanding in carrying out polio immunisation and awareness cum sensitisation campaigns not only in Delta State, but Nationwide. They are at the driving sit of the war against polio and I appreciate their efforts'.
'I want to used this medium to call on other NGOs in the State and Country at large to emulate Rotary Club by carrying out similar activities in other dedicated health programs, like fight against malaria, HIV etc'...
Concluding the SSA said, ' if other NGOs can take a cue from Rotary, the menace of some of the deadly diseases inflicting humanity will be eliminated completely'.
The Asaba district of Rotary International had on Wednesday 23rd October paid a courtesy visit to the SSA in his office, to intimate him about the Club's polio vaccination and sensitisation rally to commemorate this year's World polio day and solicited for his support.
